The Blues in Brasil

Take a look at these pictures.

Ilha Grande, RJ

Três Marias, MG

Vitória, ES

Carmo do Paranaíba, MG

Betim, MG

Ouro Preto, MG

Know what they all have in common? Blue sky. Brasil's fabulously blue sky. And my camera can't even start to capture just how deep blue it is.

There have been many times that Eric and I have stared up at the sky and wondered, "Is the sky this blue everywhere? Have we just not taken the time to notice before?"

Well, it's not in our heads after all! A little research yielded these results. The sky is actually bluest in Brasil, according to scientist people with fancy instruments.

Reason number 3,283 why I love this place!

ha! We learn to notice that since little kids, chanting the nation's anthems (I mean, at least we used to, dunno nowdays). Check the "Hino à Bandeira Nacional":

Salve, lindo pendão da esperança,
Salve, símbolo augusto da paz!
Tua nobre presença à lembrança
A grandeza da Pátria nos traz.

Recebe o afeto que se encerra
Em nosso peito juvenil,
Querido símbolo da terra,
Da amada terra do Brasil!

Em teu seio formoso retratas
Este céu de puríssimo azul,
A verdura sem par destas matas,
E o esplendor do Cruzeiro do Sul.

Recebe o afeto que se encerra
Em nosso peito juvenil,
Querido símbolo da terra,
Da amada terra do Brasil!

Contemplando o teu vulto sagrado,
Compreendemos o nosso dever;
E o Brasil, por seus filhos amados,
Poderoso e feliz há de ser.

Recebe o afeto que se encerra
Em nosso peito juvenil,
Querido símbolo da terra,
Da amada terra do Brasil!

Sobre a imensa Nação Brasileira,
Nos momentos de festa ou de dor,
Paira sempre, sagrada bandeira,
Pavilhão da Justiça e do Amor!

Recebe o afeto que se encerra
Em nosso peito juvenil,
Querido símbolo da terra,
Da amada terra do Brasil!

Emily,

This is an awesome blog, you are really good at this...
You should be an international correspondent for some international news agency...
This is really interesting observation, I can't believe I lived in Brazil for 27 years and never stopped to ask why the sky was so blue down there!
Great job, I am sharing your information with friends around the world...

Take care

Ray

I have no idea how I found your blog, but I'm glad I did. It's fun reading about your adventures in my home town in Brazil.
We actually have a couple of things in common. I'm also an x-pat, but in Switzerland (my husband is swiss). And I used to teach English as well.

That thing about the blue is so true. And that I really miss about Belo Horizonte (that and the ipês ;-)), especially now that it's winter there and it hardly ever rains. ;-)
